We specialise in old varieties of non-hybridised wheat, as well as ancient grains and non-GM maize. After a gruelling conversion process, we are harvesting our first certified organic maize in May 2018. Our next wheat harvest in December 2018 will also be certified organic. We apply no-till practices with a focus on natural inputs and use no pesticides, fungicides or herbicides.
Growth methods include field preparation through a diverse mix of cover crops. This preparation mix is then put under high density mob grazing by cattle to add fertility and utilise the field instead of leaving it fallow, at the mercy of the Prieska sun. We employ green planting, seeding directly into the live cover crop mulch. Fertility and pest control is achieved through natural, biological applications, cover cropping and rotational cropping. We’ve added bat boxes to the farm to combat pests such as stemborer.
This drive to achieve the near impossible - growing organic maize under irrigation - was instigated and undertaken with the support and funding of Farmer Angus from Stellenbosch, who needed organic non-GMO maize for his outdoor laying hens.
Santa Anna’s, producer of fine Mexican and smoked food products, have also invested in the growing of organic maize for their next level tortillas and corn chips. James Moffett of Moffett Milling & Malting Co. and a very experienced farmer in organic growing has been invaluable as consultant and mentor.
HEIRLOOM. ORGANIC. STONEGROUND.
We've been growing small batches of heirloom and ancient grains in partnership with James & Vanessa Moffett of Moffett Milling & Malting. They've been farming and milling organic grains for over 25 years and are true pioneers and food activists. While the Moffetts remain involved in a mentoring and teaching capacity, we at Lowerland are picking up their flag to keep the superb taste and quality of nutritious, terroir-adapted, full extraction, organically grown stoneground flour and grains on the market. We recently brought their stone mill to Lowerland and we're now providing these unique products to some leading bakers, restaurateurs, brewers, chefs and shops.

First harvest of fully certified organic maize available from May 2018. Growth methods include field preparation through a diverse mix of cover crops. This preparation mix is then put under high density mob grazing by cattle to add fertility and utilise the field instead of leaving it fallow and to the mercy of the Prieska sun. We employ green planting, seeding directly into the live cover crop mulch.
We use only non-GMO maize cultivars. Fertility and pest control is achieved through natural, biological applications, cover cropping and rotational cropping. Our first field trials of growing maize on drip irrigation for better control over weeds and water application, in 2018, have proven very successful and we will extend this practice in future.
